The accounting profession learned full well that our mental health was challenged in the days of COVID; this continues still as the pace and the needs of our services continue to grow.  New challenges and new ways of life added to the mix.  It is important to know that the profession is not the only ones experiencing the trials and emotional overload of change and of personal development.

Clients are, also continuously placed in stressful environments and face uncertainty that comes with rapid, inconsistent changes.  Fast Company, in its summer edition, highlighted this topic in a section called State of Mind:

  • “With our personal and professional lives intersecting as never before, it’s time for a serious conversation about how the workplace affects our mental well-being.”
  • “High-profile athletes and entertainers have increasingly been speaking out about their struggles with mental wellbeing in recent years. Very few business leaders have done the same.  There is a simple reason for that.  There’s still a stigma associated with revealing such seeming vulnerability at work…”

Amber Setter will lead us through the maze of this ever-present reality.

There are millions of people impacted by mental illness, and the pandemic only made things worse.  At work, accountants are being asked to lead clients through an increasingly complex and ambiguous regulatory environment — with engagement teams that are understaffed.  We are also navigating daily stressors outside of the office: political uncertainty, visible acts of violence and racism, whispers of an impending recession are all topics that can keep us up at night.  It is clear: the demand on an accountant’s psychological resources is running at an all-time high.

If you have found yourself wondering “When is this all going to end?”, you are not alone. In this thought-provoking session, we will:

  • Explore mental health and prevalence of mental illnesses
  • Distinguish the intersection of mental health and performance
  • Understand how to recognize signs in self and others
  • Discuss methods for caring for your whole self – a human being, not a human doing
